Ed grew up in Texas and graduated from North Texas State University (now the University of North Texas) in 1980. He obtained his Master’s degree in Social Psychology from the University of Nebraska – Lincoln where his focus was on small group decision-making. He came to the University of California – Irvine to continue working in the area of jury decision-making. He earned his Ph.D. in 1991 in Social Ecology, specializing in Law & Psychology. With the idea of continuing in academics, Ed went to California Western School of Law and received his J.D. in 1992.

During law school, Ed started his legal career as a law clerk with Callahan, McCune & Willis and joined the firm as an attorney working with the psychology defense team and automotive group. After about ten years, Ed left and went to work as a Superior Court attorney with Riverside County where he also sat as a judge pro tem. He left the public sector and went back into private practice around 2010 and worked in a boutique firm specializing in medical malpractice and personal injury defense.

Throughout his career, Ed has kept his hand in academics as an instructor at UC-Irvine and UC-Riverside. He served on the Trial Court Judicial Attorneys Education Committee and taught courses at the California Center for Judicial Education and Research (CJER) Trial Judicial Attorneys’ Institute.

Continuing his love of research and writing, Ed comes to CTSC in our law and motion department.

When his head is not buried in a book, Ed loves to travel, dive, cook, or just hang out with his wife, dogs and horses.
